Abstract

This paper considers the problem of model reduction for nD systems described by partial differential equations. We focus on temporal-spatial systems and more particularly on the diffusion equation to develop a Galerkin projection method in which a simultaneous projection on both the spatial as well as the time coordinates is carried out. It is shown how suitable data correlation operators define an orthogonal basis of time functions and an orthogonal basis of spatial functions that are optimal in a well defined sense. The main result provides an algebraic characterization of the spectral coefficients of the reduced order model.
