Abstract

In this article an experimental case study for the performance evaluation of a Mobile Ad-Hoc Wireless Networked Controlled System (WiNCS) is presented. The control scheme is based on a client–server architecture where the communication channel is carried over a Mobile Ad–Hoc Network (MANET) consisting of: a) a set of two base stations responsible for the control command generation and the process output sampling, and b) an intermediate communication node that acts as a data forwarder. The communication link relies on the IEEE standard for Low Rate Wireless Personal Networks (IEEE LR-WPAN), namely 802.15.4, while the routing policy is based on the flooding protocol. The presented results gained from the simulation and experimental studies, illustrate the deterioration of the system’s performance due to the network induced delays while highlighting the impact that the network topology characteristics have on the performance of the control process.
