Abstract

In this work, we consider the multi-stage optimization of a general 2nd order damped distributed parameter system with distributed controllers and disturbances. Our approach is to first find the worst distribution of disturbances for the uncontrolled (open loop) system with only nominal damping. In the next optimization stage, we use the worst distribution of disturbances to design the additional damping so that the open loop system will have certain system theoretic properties. Finally, we optimize the actuator location of the system that has the worst distribution of disturbances and optimal damping distribution. Employing performance measures (closed loop), an optimal actuator location is found that minimizes a certain performance measure and at the same time exhibits a certain robustness with respect to the worst spatial distribution of disturbances. A numerical example that involves cable/wave dynamics illustrates the different stages of optimization along with the simulation results.
